I am having difficulty making contourArea() to work with my code.

I am trying to calculate the area of each circle that I have detected using canny followed by morphologyEx(Close) and then findContours().

Here is my code so far:

cvtColor(Original_Image, Grayscale_Image, CV_BGR2GRAY);`

GaussianBlur(Grayscale_Image, Blurred_Image, Size(7,7), 1.5, 1.5);`

Canny(Blurred_Image, Binary_Image, 0, 30, 3);

morphologyEx(Binary_Image, Closed_Image, MORPH_CLOSE, getStructuringElement(MORPH_RECT, Size(5,5)), Point(-1,-1), 1);

findContours(Closed_Image, Contours, Hierarchy, CV_RETR_EXTERNAL, CV_CHAIN_APPROX_SIMPLE, Point(0,0) );

Contours_Image = Mat::zeros(Closed_Image.size(), CV_8UC3);

a = 0;

for(a = 0; a < Contours.size(); a++)
    Color = Scalar(0, 0, 255);
    drawContours(Contours_Image, Contours, a, Color, -1, 8, Hierarchy, 0, Point() );

I tried double Area; Area = contourArea(Contours, false); cout << "Area = " << Area << endl; but that didn't work. On the reference example there are more code such as

contour.push_back(Point2f(0, 0));
contour.push_back(Point2f(10, 0));
contour.push_back(Point2f(10, 10));
contour.push_back(Point2f(5, 4));
double area0 = contourArea(contour);
vector<Point> approx;
approxPolyDP(contour, approx, 5, true);
double area1 = contourArea(approx);
cout << "area0 =" << area0 << endl <<
"area1 =" << area1 << endl <<
"approx poly vertices" << approx.size() << endl;`

but I don't understand it. I tried copying the example to my code but it didn't work either.

The reference manual also mentions that if I draw the contours using drawContours it will give a different value. I have drawn the contour and set thickness to -1 so it fills the contour. Would this make a difference in calculating the area?

Can anyone help me understand it or correct my code please? I simply want to calculate the area of each detected circle in my image. (Click here for the drawn contours image)

it says on line 971 but I only have 215 lines of code. Perhaps I just constructed the code wrong? I have 4 contours I wanted to calculate area for but on my code I don't think I'm making it calculate each contour separately. Would it help if I post my whole code? – user2253922 Apr 17 '13 at 14:32
