The program is to accept input for how long the sim will run, sleep and how many producers/consumers to create. When i run the program it asks for input but stops at "starting threads" and nothing happens. I am figuring that the problem lies with the buffer functions but i am not sure. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.Note**//on lines of code are commented out, only concerned with it running as is without semaphores at this point

You have spin-loops in both your buffer-release and buffer-insert functions. Neither of them are using their mutex nor condition variables correctly at all. In fact, you're latching your mutex, then just waiting on a while loop undefined concurrency behavior to update counter. You need to review pthread mutexes, condition variables, and how to properly utilize them. – WhozCraig Apr 22 '13 at 5:03

yes, issue is with buffers. When i move the buffer function call to the end of producer and consumer threads it shows thread id. so buffer function is causing a stagnation. Even when i do not use mutex or semaphores it still hangs there. So i figure its the algorithm itself. – user2125805 Apr 23 '13 at 1:08
