I am using Sql server 2008 r2 database and my application is in Java, I am connection to database using jdbc.


I am using stored procedure in my database. and calling them from my jdbc.

whenever i want to insert, update, delete or select , i have to do this:

callableStatement = con.prepareCall(storedProcedure); 
callableStatement.setInt(1, getID()); 
ResultSet resultSet = callableStatement.getResultSet(); 
while ( { 
   int returnedID = resultSet.getInt(1); 
   String returnedName = resultSet.getString(2);   


Much of code seems repetitive other with just some differences like :

  • name of stored procedure.
  • its parameter.
  • its output.


How can I reduce that repetitive code please? Is there any design pattern that I can use?

I don't think there is any way to make that any smaller then it already is. Especially with the stored procedure on the DB side. The way I've been doing it is writing the string in java adding an extra line, but you're doing it in less lines then that. – Caveman42 Apr 30 '13 at 12:13

Template method pattern might help. If you are using spring have a look at Spring JDBC Templates. Or you can do something like this:

and use it:

I totally agree that this pattern is the right solution, the abstraction should define the DB access life-cycles for read (querying and processing the result-set) and for write (handling transactions) and the concrete implementation should take care for the specific scenario as mentioned – Aviram May 2 '13 at 8:25

I have successfully been using MyBatis for Stored Procedure calls to SQL Server and I find it very useful.

I will give you a simple example on what is needed for a simple application using Spring for dependency injection. You can use this example as a "template" for your own work. I use Maven as a build tool but that is not necessary. You can supply the needed jar files any way you want.

This is not a design pattern. It is merely a nice way to call a stored procedure without all the JDBC clutter...

To be able to use Maven and the SQL Server JDBC Driver you will have to install the jar in the local (or remote) repo manually:

mvn install:install-file -Dfile=sqljdbc4.jar -DartifactId=sqljdbc4 -Dversion=4.0 -Dpackaging=jar

The most interresting file you'll work with is the Mapper file. In my example I use an SP to get user information and this is what the mapper file looks like:
