I have a (you guessed it) homework assignment in Java that has been driving me up the wall. I am making a chat client based on TCP that will eventually use Swing as a GUI, but right now I'm just trying to get the thing working on a CLI.

I have marked in the code (ClientHandler) where the server seems to hang. I'm sure it's a problem of IO streams, but as to what exactly, I'm a bit stumped.

The program should add a client when the client enters his/her username (on the same port, or else the program blows up (I haven't gotten that far yet)), but the server thread hangs and doesn't actually add the client.

The input stream at the marked bit of code doesn't seem to work. At all. I'm still kinda new to the whole ObjectInputStream/OutputStream bit (okay, streams in general aren't my specialty).

I have a Swing window made in WindowBuilderPro3 that I will implement later, but again, I'm just trying to get the model working.

I have searched the many similar questions here --and they have helped-- but I am still stumped. If someone can point me in the right direction (even to an answered question that does a good job answering my question), I would be most grateful. Thank you all very much.

Note: I removed imports and some comments as well as the very simple Message and User classes (they just hold (respectively) from username, to username, timestamp, message body (all Strings); username, socket) to meet the char limit

What's the last log message you get after a client joins? Is incomingMessage non-null before you try to call its toString() method? Can subsequent clients join once the server 'hangs' or does it refuse connections? If it refuses connections, in what way exactly? –  Gian May 7 '13 at 6:22
    
A client never successfully joins. You must use the same ObjectOutputStream and ObjectInputStream for the life of the socket, and construct them in that order, at both ends. –  EJP May 7 '13 at 8:28

You don't need to use DataInput/OutputStream with ObjectInput/OutputStream.

I suggest using PrintWriter/BufferedReader as these are simple. e.g. you can telnet to your sever and see what it sends and type what you want to send.

If you use your debugger (in you IDE) you don't need any where as many trace messages.

Alright, I've been messing around with it and have hit a bit of a snag. Messages are being sent as an object that contain user to/from, the message body, and a timestamp. Writing the messages isn't a problem with PrintWriter, but reading with BufferedReader is. I can't read the objects with BufferedReader. Is there anything else that would get the job done? I suppose I could use a single String that could somehow be parsed into the four separate parts, but the less mass-refactoring I have to do, the better. –  user2357026 May 7 '13 at 8:16
    
To separate the parts would mean adding four lines of code (or less). The time it takes to write code is very small compared to the time to get it right and test it. –  Peter Lawrey May 7 '13 at 22:54

Yes, I thought of that after I wrote that (I've done that previously a small number of times). I think I was just mainly fixed on using Object input/output based on a suggestion I had heard a while back. Thank you for your help. –  user2357026 May 9 '13 at 2:17
