My understanding is @Transactional should only be applied to service methods that need to occur within a transaction (such as setters). Say I have the following two classes (DAO layer and Service layer respectively)...

Now if I called addAllPlayers() this works fine, no problems at all. But when I use getAll(), sessionFactory.getCurrentSession throws a HibernateException, no session found for current thread.

If I add @Transactional to the service layer for getAll(), this will now work "fine". The problem with this is I shouldn't have to open a transaction just to call a getter.

Can anyone think of any reason why my I need to add @Transactional on a getter method to get the sessionFactory to have a current session? My servlet-context.xml and persistance-context.xml are shown below (these are both referenced in my web.xml in contextConfigLocation)

@Transactional does not only open a DB transaction but in case of Hibernate it also creates a hibernate session if there is none. A typical approach is to use OpenSessionInViewFilter which creates one Hibernate session for each http request.

If you don't want to use this filter you need to annotate getters with @Transactional as well.

You can use the readOnly attribute to reduce the performance impact if any - @Transactional(readonly=true). – gkamal May 16 '13 at 7:42
    
Am I correct in thinking @Transactional does create a performance impact as my understanding was if a transaction was opened, it would lock the table for the period of the transaction. – david99world May 16 '13 at 8:14
    
Transaction does not lock the table. Only modifications do. What is locked depends on db - for oracle locks are row scoped, for hsqldb it's table by default I think. – mrembisz May 16 '13 at 9:12
    
So by that logic, is it "right" to annotate every service method if it uses a sessionFactory in the DAO, irrelevant to whether it's setter or getter so that the sessionFactory has a currentSession? – david99world May 16 '13 at 14:02
    
Putting Transactional also on service layer methods which access db but don't perform any modifications should be okay. I'm not a hibernate expert to tell whether it is more appropriate than using OpenSessionInViewFilter. – mrembisz May 16 '13 at 14:34
