I am getting a BeanCreationException when I am trying to use Spring and jndi in my application. I am using these files :

For Tomcat 7 :

Does it has to do with some library(jar) that I must add to tomcat's lib directory?I have already added com.mysql.jdbc.Driver jar but I wonder if I need to add another library. –  skiabox May 16 '13 at 18:20

It would appear that either:

1) The tomcat JNDI context is not able to initialize itself due to errors (this would be rare though), or

2) The spring application context is getting loaded before the Tomcat JNDI context is initialized.

First, are you sure there are not earlier errors being reported by Tomcat? You will need to review the {tomcat}/logs/localhost.yyy.mm.dd.log, because not all errors are written to the console.

Second, how are you starting Tomcat and initializing the Spring application context? One common technique is to use Spring's ContextLoaderListener, like this (in web.xml):

If you are using some custom technique to initialize spring, then perhaps are you are doing so before JNDI is initialized in Tomcat?

To troubleshoot your situation further, you should create a very simple web application without spring, using a single servlet. In that servlet, you can use code like this:

Context initContext = new InitialContext();
Context envContext  = (Context)initContext.lookup("java:/comp/env");
DataSource ds = (DataSource)envContext.lookup("jdbc/SpringMvcDatabase");
Connection conn = ds.getConnection();

If that works, then you know your Tomcat/JNDI/DataSource configuration is correct.

I am using IntelliJ Idea, so I am starting Tomcat from the ide, but I first pass the environment variable CATALINA_BASE (name) setting it to /Library/Tomcat (value). –  skiabox May 18 '13 at 14:03
    
Then I would first try starting Tomcat without Intellij to make sure you have configured jndi/datasource correctly. There are many ways to start and use Tomcat from Intellij. Regardless, the underlying issue is still the same: tomcat's JNDI is not initialized before the Spring application context loads. So more specifically, how are you initializing the Spring application context? –  kaliatech May 18 '13 at 15:40

Btw the application works fine without Tomcat if I replace jee with another dataSource bean for example one that is based upon Apache Commons BasicDatasource(org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource) –  skiabox May 18 '13 at 15:49
