I have an application that allows the user to draw shapes (polylines) on a map and save them to the database (via AJAX) along with some meta data (name, description, etc). I recently ported the code to use GMap APIv3 rather than v2. It appeared to be working fine, but in the last couple of weeks I've noticed some horrible performance problems when the user has many shapes (~20) with many points (80-200 per shape).

It gets so bad with the one user's map that the browser freezes up (both IE9 and the latest Chrome). This never happened when the app used v2 GMap and I can't confirm if it was always this way with v3. I'm using blitz-gmap (https://code.google.com/p/blitz-gmap-editor/) to handle the drawing elements and the following code to parse the KML and create overlays. I use the overlays to reference the shapes from another div for hiding and deleting. I can also provide the KML the causes the app to freeze, but it loads fine in both Google Earth and GMap4 (http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php). Am I doing something blatantly sloppy?

Can you provide the KML? I suspect it is just the number of vertices that are being rendered as native Google Maps API v3 objects. Does it only happen when the objects are editable? –  geocodezip May 24 '13 at 21:23
    
I provided a link to the pastebin of the KML. I have not tried to make them uneditable, but I guess that might be why it loads fine in GMap4. –  smedrick May 25 '13 at 1:04
    
If I toggle the edit mode before clicking "parse KML to map" on this page, it displays OK (at least in Chrome and IE10) –  geocodezip May 25 '13 at 1:17

There is a significant performance penalty for making all the polylines editable (each vertex gets a draggable marker). Only allow editing of those polylines that actually need to be changed (probably only one at a time), and make them default to not editable.

She's loading slick as snot now. Thank you so much! I changed the tmpOverlay.setEditable(true) to false and turned off the click listener. This will do for now, but I will probably add functionality to turning editing on for a single shape by clicking it, in the future. –  smedrick May 28 '13 at 14:23
