A very good blogpost explains how it works:

The variables slt and c are the salt and “hash” for a password. We don’t know what the password is, but s1 and s2 tell us that it consists of letters between 'a' and 'e', and n tells us that it’s four letters long. The script “hashes” passwords fitting those parameters until it finds one that matches, adds it as a cookie, and proceeds to the site. The cookie appears to be cached for an hour, so the user doesn’t have to keep doing this every time they navigate to a different page. The password and hash appear to be randomly generated by the server.

I realize that one could evaluate this script in javascript to scrape it, but I'd prefer to actually write some code (in Ruby) to solve it myself, keeping things simpler. How would one go about calculating that document.cookie value?

Ruby can calculate crc32 checksums (see this and this) , but they don't deal with the salting and hashing that this algorithm employs, I think. Though they may be a big part of the answer to this question.

simpler would be a greasemonkey script that rides atop the page and saves whatever you want as it's available on the page. More than 10 lines of code and you're wasting keystrokes... – dandavis Jun 11 '13 at 21:29
Fair enough, but the web-scraper is going to be run dynamically from ruby based on user input.. something a browser client is not naturally setup for. – babonk Jun 11 '13 at 21:31
You've clearly realised this yourself (as I can see from your solution), but the implementation of CRC32 on the original site has a bug, as they use signed, rather than unsigned shift. As a result, Ruby's built-in CRC32 routine won't work. Porting their code is the only option. – James_pic Nov 25 '13 at 9:31
