An app I'm building contains a catalogue of thousands of items, which need to be stored on the phone. Currently I am achieving this through CoreData, as logically it seemed like the best place to put it. I'm using GCD to run the CoreData insertion processes in the background and showing a progress bar / current percentage complete. This works as expected, however for only 5000 items, it's taking 8 minutes to complete on an iPhone 4. This application will be used on the 3GS and up, and will more likely contain 30/40 thousand items once it launches. Therefore this processing time is going to be horrifically long.

Is there any way I can use a CSV file or something to search through instead of storing each item in CoreData? I'm assuming there are some efficiency downfalls with an approach like this, but it would alleviate the excessive wait times. Unless there is another solution that would help with this problem.

EDIT: I'm not sure how I'd go about saving the context at the end of the entire operation, as it uses a separate context within the loop. Any suggestions for this would be very much appreciated. I've got no idea how to progress with this.

You can just parse the CSV file and store it in one big array, but I suggest you find what takes time inserting 5000 records to the core data persistent store. I remember I did i inserted 4000 records and it took about 10 seconds. Can you post the insert code? –  Avi Tsadok Jun 19 '13 at 7:30

Why do you want so much data loaded on a mobile device? Using CSV will be slower and worse for memory. Can you not query a remote DB and download only what is required? –  Wain Jun 19 '13 at 7:35

Look at using RestKit to manage the download and store update for you. Your repeated fetching will be slow, as will creating a new thread and context and saving on each loop iteration. –  Wain Jun 19 '13 at 7:37

Ok, here's your problem.

Every time you insert a record, you do a save operation to the context. Now, don't do it, that's what takes alot of time.

Do the save operation once, in the end of the loop, not every time you insert a record.

As each context is created within the loop, how do I get the changes I've made from that background context into the main context I created outside of the loop? –  Luke Smith Jun 19 '13 at 8:09
    
I changed it so that both 'backgroundManagedContext's were set to self.managedObjectContext, and saving this context at the end of the method, but this produced this message: ' Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSGenericException', reason: '*** Collection <__NSCFSet: 0x7eac120> was mutated while being enumerated.' –  Luke Smith Jun 19 '13 at 8:46

In your case I would check what is really time consuming?

Is it downloading data, is it importing data to CoreData?

Where do you get data from? Do you download it or you have it in Application Bundle?

CoreData is faster then CSV file. So it wont make your app faster.

Some tricks:

  • While importing data just save context at the end of the process. Do not save context in a loop.

  • If you do not need to download data and can put in the bundle, you can create coredata file in the simulator, put in the bundle and copy the file on first launch. It is really much more faster then importing data.

The data comes from a remote source, and can be updated numerous times per day. So whilst bundling the data with the application could help initially, after a few days / a week, it's still going to be having to parse an equally large number of updates. I figured as much RE: CSV Efficiency, it was a suggestion I received so thought I'd check it out. Not something I've ever run with before. I'll remove the save's and add them at the end. See if that makes much difference. Also, the downloading of the data takes a few seconds, it's the CoreData processes that are taking the time. –  Luke Smith Jun 19 '13 at 7:39

I'm not sure how to save the context outside of the loop, at the end of the process, as the processes are initiated within the loop. Would you swap it round, so that the loop was taking place in a process? Then save at the end of that? I'm struggling to get my head around how I'd achieve this. –  Luke Smith Jun 19 '13 at 10:28
    
Yes I would swap it round. So you have the loop in one process. You use the same dispatchqueue anyway. Actually you can save more opertions this way, like creating managed object context just once. –  Mert Jun 19 '13 at 10:51
