This code is used in a small note taking utility to demonstrate the use of UIDs and the associated *nix permission bit. The purpose of it is to allow multiple users to access only their own notes in the same file. It accomplishes this by supposedly writing the UID to the line at while the note is being written (I'm confused as to how this works but that's not my real question)

By writing &userid instead of userid I understand that he is passing a pointer to memory instead of the actual value, and with that, the following code searches the file for the user's note:

I don't understand how the statement while(note_uid != user_uid)will ever be false, and therefore, how lengthwill ever be returned. Since note_uidis set to -1, when will user_uidever equal -1 as well?

You are read-ing note_uid inside the loop...; so it will usually change... – Basile Starynkevitch Jun 22 '13 at 5:56
You're looking at this the wrong way. user_uid stays constant throughout the while loop. It is note_uid that changes. Note the read(fd, &note_uid, 4)` call on the first line inside the while. This reads 4 bytes into note_uid. – dranov Jun 22 '13 at 5:58

if(read(fd, &note_uid, 4) != 4)

is inside the loop. It will change note_uid from -1 to something reasonable.

@Koan You're saying that you looked at read(fd, &note_uid, 4) and saw read(fd, &userid, 4)? Or read(fd, &user_uid, 4)? That's strange. A meta-suggestion: when reading code, try to avoid all preconceptions. – Jim Balter Jun 22 '13 at 6:58
