I'm trying to run a more or less simple query on a MySQL table with about 100000 entries (Size: 2319.58MB; avg: 24KB pre row).

This is the query:

These queries are created by Doctrine2 (ORM). We are using MySQL 5.5.31 on a virtual machine (1GB ram, single core) running Debian 6.0.7. Why is the performance of the query so bad? Is it a database design fault or is the vbox just to small to handle this amount of data?

Add an index on discr column :

ALTER TABLE `notifications` ADD INDEX `idx_discr` (`discr` ASC) ;

Good point! I've added an index to the discr column. CREATE INDEX discr_idx ON notifications (discr). Query runtime is not at 0.1 - 0.5sec –  Frido Jun 25 '13 at 16:31
    
Each time you add a clause to your query, if your table is a big one (even a small one), do not forget to index this column otherwise MySQL will consume a lot of RAM and time. But for your database schema, it may be better to create a reference table for your "discr" (with just "discr_id" and "discr_label" column) property and then add a foreign key (discr_id) in "notifications" table. Performance will increase a lot because the index is on integer and not characters. –  kmas Jun 26 '13 at 13:57

You're filtering by notifications.discr but don't appear to have that indexed. Have you tried adding an index on it?
