I have a project with a similar data model to Stack Overflow. I'm using the MEAN stack for it so I'm trying to think of the best way to model my data for MongoDB (using MongooseJS). So I'm thinking if someone could give me guidance of how to model Stack Overflow in mongoDB that would give me a good starting point for modeling my app taking into consideration ease of use vs performance.

Obviously Stack Overflow is pretty big and probably has a lot more under the covers than we think of in our regular use of the app. So here are the things I'm mainly interested in modeling out:

  • Users
  • Questions
  • Answers
  • Votes
  • Comments
  • Flag reports

All other objects would be interesting, but I'm not totally interested in that.

Some things to consider:

  • I'm not as interested in the attributes of the objects as I am the relationships between them. I'm mostly interested to know whether to embed or reference documents from a performance to ease of use perspective.
  • Embedding Votes in a question and comment might not be the best solution because you view them in the user profile page as well. But I'm not sure of whether using references is the best way to do it either.
  • With my app you can have comments on comments, so maybe make a note of any differences with regards to this difference.

This is a very broad question - What benefits do you think mongodb will give you over using a relational for this?

I'd start to model from a completely denormalised view then normalise where it makes sense / is beneficial.

The positives are each document will have high locality of data, representing a full domain. Downsides you may have to have multiple copies of data, which will need to be maintained - eg user profile data.

I would definately read and consume the data-modeling guide and check out some of the presentations.

But the crux of the matter will be; how are you accessing that data, does your model make sense for your requirements, will it scale for the anticipated read / write ratios. How can you get the aggregated data that you need?
