This is a program that i made to encrypt text using one time pad encryption, but the program is not properly decrypting the cipher-text, some of the characters are outputted as question marks, i think that the problem is related to the Modular arithmetic part of the code.

This is the code that decrypts the cipher text. I think that there might be a problem with the subtraction of the key from the cipher text.

c = map(lambda x: x[0]-x[1], zip(a,b))

#prints out the decrypted plain text

A quick guess: you might want to do the substraction actually using modular arithmetics: lambda x: (x[0]-x[1]) % 26 –  J0HN Jun 27 '13 at 19:33

Eh, yes, so would mod 256 be a solution? Also, you might want to make sure your files are opened in binary mode. Not all (c + x) % 256 is a valid text character. –  owlstead Jun 27 '13 at 19:45

You could perform a modulus 256 on the final value. You may want to make sure your files are opened in binary mode; not all (c + x) % 256 values will result in a valid character.
