I want to read messages from either a Queue.Queue or a TCP socket, whichever comes first. How can it be achieved without resorting to 2 threads ? Platform is CPython 2.7.5 on Windows

You can't... easily. Something like select(2) would work for two blocking sockets, but not for a Queue. The closest you could get would be to use non-blocking methods in a loop, if that's acceptable. – Aya Jul 5 '13 at 19:45

To do it in a single thread, you'll have to use non-blocking methods, and merge them into a single event loop. I'm actually using select instead of non-blocking socket I/O here, since it's slightly cleaner if you need to read from multiple sockets...

Iterate 10 times per second or so and poll for both..Not very efficient but I guess there is no other way. How about using 2 threads and pushing the data to a single Queue ? Would it be a better way? – GabiMe Jul 5 '13 at 21:16
@GabiMe You can adjust the TIMEOUT value to taste. If you're prepared to use multiple threads, there are lots of options. If each thread can handle its own received data, then I'd just put each blocking call in its own thread. – Aya Jul 6 '13 at 13:26

You can do something along these lines:

def check_for_message(queue,socket,sock_accept_size=512):
    while True:
        except socket.error:
            """Do stuff if there is no message"""
        except Queue.Empty:
            """Do stuff if there is no message"""
        yield (que_msg,sock_msg)

Then you can iterate through it using:

for que_message,sock_message in check_for_message(que_instance,socket_instance):
    print que_message,sock_message

There is a very nice trick to do this here that applies to your problem.

class PollableQueue(queue.Queue):
    def __init__(self):
        # Create a pair of connected sockets

            # Compatibility on non-POSIX systems
            server = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
            server.bind(('', 0))
            self._putsocket = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
            self._getsocket, _ = server.accept()

    def fileno(self):
        return self._getsocket.fileno()

    def put(self, item):

    def get(self):
        return super().get()
