I am trying to play a video from the gallery that is .mp4 format and recorded video the camera app. I am get a surface has been released error when I try to do setDisplay. I have read most of the forums and I am sure it is how I am handling my surfaceView or my holders. My surface is always destroyed before I call my start and I don't know how to keep it created. Need communities advice as it is my first time with this

I know it gets the path of the file correctly and when I remove any attempts to play the video, the audio part worked. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I see the surface on the homescreen when I start my app, so my XML may not be correct but I think it should be okay:

My XML for the surface is below. Once again, not sure why the surface is showing up when the app loads but I just want the video to play there once it is selected from the gallery. :
