I have a shapefile with polygons. I want to find the centroid of each and put their x y coordinates into the attribute table under the fields Easting and Northing. I was able to find the easting and northing, but i cannot get it into the attribute table (it says null).

arcpy.env.workspace = folderpath
arcpy.env.overwriteOutput = True

inputRoofs = "Roof"

table = inputRoofs

arcpy.AddField_management(inputRoofs, 'Easting', 'DOUBLE')

roof_cursor = arcpy.UpdateCursor("Roof")
for roof in roof_cursor:
    roof_geom = roof.Shape

Do you really want to use Python for this? A right click on the Easting and Northing field names in the Attribute Table would get you to Calculate Geometry. – PolyGeo Aug 6 '13 at 12:01

Here is one implementation that uses CalculateField to assign centroid values to new fields.

                              fieldPrecision, fieldScale)
    arcpy.AddField_management(inFeatures, fieldName2, "DOUBLE",

    arcpy.CalculateField_management(inFeatures, fieldName1, expression1,
