I am learning android and was trying to implement the code from android's Bluetooth guide, but it's giving me a lot of troubles since "tutorial" isn't very clear. A bit later I did found an example:

This one crashed when I tried to run it on a real device and emulator as well. Also I wrote my own code, combining all I understood and it looks like this:

This one is crashing as well.

After some minutes of hard testing I came to a conclusion: if I try to extend MainActivity with ListActivity, app will crash on launch. At the same time, if I extend MainActivity with Activity, it launches with no problems. But in this case I can't use this.setListAdapter(mArrayAdapter); and the only solution I see is create another activity that will be called from MainActivity on launch and will execute this bluetooth code. So, my questions are: 1) is it normal to app crash on launch just because MainActivity is extending ListActivity and 2) is there are viable solutions besides the one I mentioned?

Post a stack trace from logcat if you have a crash. –  Karakuri Jul 14 '13 at 1:18

Most likely you don't have a listview in your xml layout with the right id, but we need to see the trace. –  Gabe Sechan Jul 14 '13 at 1:19

From your stack trace:

Your content must have a ListView whose id attribute is 'android.R.id.list'

That means that in your layout xml file you must have a ListView with its id set to "android.R.id.list".

Read more about ListActivity here. It is mandatory to understand how it is used.
