I have some user input boxes which will influence the wording of some text that is generated when some checkboxes are clicked. A simplification of the site is as follows, so I can better illustrate my problem.

After inputting some values in the input boxes, the user will click a checkbox from the top set and the bottom set. This will generate some text in a text area. I have a working script that modifies the rendered text, based on a series of if/else conditions from the input fields as follows:

Admittedly, this is a rather brute force way to combine the various patterns from two of the three input boxes into a series of if/else statements, but it works. If I wanted to include the third input box however, the coding would be very tedious.

But, I'm limited by what I've learned so far with javascript - so any advice on how to better organize or rethink this if/else logic would be appreciated. Here is a fiddle that shows a simplified version of my site with the above if/else statements: http://jsfiddle.net/GzVu3/

Note that you may have some unwanted behavior here: if rbcIx is exactly 5.91, then your if statements that check for > 5.91 and < 5.91 will fail. Perhaps you want one of those to be a >= or <= comparison. Same thing with the wbcIx comparisons to 3.59, etc. –  esker Jul 18 '13 at 3:08

Here's the relevant part of a simplified implementation.

Since the conditions that determine the WBC and RBC text are independent of each other, we can separate these into different functions and eliminate duplicated code. Moving these checks into functions make your code more reusable and self-describing. This could probably be further refactored to introduce the concept of numeric ranges and text placeholders, allowing you to specify your logic declaratively as a set of rules instead of procedural if-statements, but I didn't go that far. Also, the chosenSite manipulations were repeated in every condition of the if/else block, so I moved them out of the if statements to eliminate that duplicated code as well.

Thank you. I think I can follow what you have done here. A couple of questions, though - I don't understand what is being passed into the 'baseText' argument of each function? Also, if you notice on my fiddle example, the textarea builds sequentially, based on the boxes checked. Thus, a tidy report can be generated by a series of clicks. In your fiddle, only one statement is applicable at any given click. The importance of building the text (via the mytexbox += line) is key, and may not have been adequately expressed in the question. There was a simple typo in my code, I had a = instead of += that prevented the text from being built incrementally. I fixed the answer above and the jsfiddle (note the jsfiddle link changed) –  esker Jul 18 '13 at 15:06
    
About the functions with baseText param: your original code had long statements looking like this: mytextbox.value += partTypes[...].replace(...).replace(...);. Each replace function call result further modifies the text from partTypes[...]. I simply broke this up into multiple statements/function calls, so the baseText param is that text from partTypes getting incrementally modified. A comparable way to write my code is: mytextbox.value += describeRbc(describeLeukocytes(partTypes[...], wbcIx), rbcIx). –  esker Jul 18 '13 at 15:12
