# Calculate average of columns data in a matrix in R

There is 63x14 matrix data. I want to take the average of three column each from last col to first col. I wrote the script as below. But it shows errors as follows. Also it is not save in a given matrix format. Since I'm a beginner to R, I got help from your site always. Please help me to solve this problem.

How can I combine those separate 12 columns to a 63 x 12 matrix?

Problem is this line: `SAT<- matrix(nrow=(mydata), ncol=12)`. You've set the number of rows, presumably, to be 63*14. I assume you want that to be something else. –  Thomas Jul 22 '13 at 10:12

@Jeewa yes, you set the number of columns and rows, but not the data source. You should use something like `matrix(my.data, ncol = 63)` (rows will be calculated on the fly by R). –  Roman Luštrik Jul 22 '13 at 10:23

I think you have yourself down a bit of a coding rabbit hole. You've got way too many functions in there that really aren't doing anything for you. You don't need print. You're trying to store a matrix into a matrix, without specifying meaningful/correct index values, etc. I'd really recommend taking a look at some introductory R texts to get familiar with indexing, which seems to be your main issue here.

In much simpler terms, I think you just want something like:

``````out <- sapply(3:ncol(mydata), function(i) {
rowMeans(mydata[, c(i-2, i-1, i)], na.rm=TRUE)
})
``````
