I am trying to modify the sleekxmpp echobot example to act more like a client. I am able to receive and print messages with the code below but how do I make the code also allow me to send messages to another JID at will and not as an auto response to a message received. I am relatively new to python so any help will be very useful THANK YOU.

I have figure out this problem. this problem can use xmlstream._start_thread to fix. but it still a litte ugly.

The answer to your question is given in the "sign in, send, logout" tutorial. The main changes to the standard EchoBot code you posted are that you

  • do not register a method for incoming messages and
  • call send_message in the start function:

    self.send_message(mto="some@jid", mbody="some message text")
    

obviously, you're not limited to the start function; you can call this function at any point in your program when you want to send a message.

the problem is how to listen the stdin stream without block the main thread.

I ever try to use something like below::

xmpp_client.process(block=False)
while True:
    line = sys.stdin.readline()
    if line == "quit":
         break
    print "you send: %s" % line
    self.send(line)

but it does not work. the while will block all the message in. I check the source, it is really strange. the sleekxmpp seems to use multi threads. but the while stills block the whole process.

so I think, you should implement something like event-driver on the sys.stdin file. I check the callback/basehandler source. it seems both not fit this. so the problem is how to make event-driven on input-message and where to start the event-loop.

@hannes, we knows hte send_messages method. but it not finish the chat demo cause you can't input the message on running.

I am focus on this question, too. hope somebody can fix it.
