I'm trying to use the timeit module to time the performance of two implementations of insertion sort.

I wanted to use the same setup data for both of the sorting functions below so I thought I would just create a timeit.Timer instance and then change the stmt attribute of the instance as I go along. This is not working.

I get the same results across the board which is the same result for the default stmt='pass'.

Yet when I test the code in the setup string, it seems to be working.

I also tried removing the strings around the setup code so that it will be in the main module and using the setup string t = timeit.Timer(setup="from __main__ import sorted_samples, reversed_samples, shuffled_samples, random_samples, insort1, insort2") But that didn't work either. –  RussW Aug 5 '13 at 18:31
    
In the end I put the code in a module setup.py and then used the timeit.timeit function, each time passing it a new stmt and the same setup string which is "import setup". Although still not sure if it does the actual import only once in this case. –  RussW Aug 5 '13 at 19:04
