It seems like you never instantiate dbHelper

Change:

ExternalDbOpenHelper dbOpenHelper = new ExternalDbOpenHelper(this);

To:

dbHelper = new ExternalDbOpenHelper(this);

this is the error I get now 08-06 13:05:54.056: E/AndroidRuntime(1192): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{com.catholic_hymnal.arnold/com.catholic_hymnal.arnold.PrepopSqlite‌​DbActivity}: android.database.sqlite.SQLiteReadOnlyDatabaseException: attempt to write a readonly database (code 8) –  Azeem Aug 6 '13 at 17:56
