I'm trying to convert a date/time that is in string format to datetime format. I currently have this but it's not working:

<xsl:function name="hcim:ParseDateTime" as="xs:dateTime">
    <xsl:param name="DateTimeAsString" as="xs:string"/>

    <xsl:variable name="date" select="xs:date(substring($DateTimeAsString, 0, 10))"/>
    <xsl:variable name="time" select="xs:time(substring($DateTimeAsString, 11, 8))"/>
    <xsl:value-of select="dateTime($date, $time)" />
</xsl:function>

The error I'm getting is:

XSLT2 Transformation failed: Error in XPath 2.0 expression 
    (Cast failed, invalid lexical value - xs:date 'String' - xs:date)
Error occurred in file '******' in statement 
    'select="xs:date(substring($DateTimeAsString, 0, 10))"'.

Is there a better way to do this? My incoming string is in the format:

For the xs:date part I think <xsl:variable name="date" select="xs:date(substring($DateTimeAsString, 1, 10))"/> should work. For the xs:time part I think you need more work than extracting a substring, as your sample has PM so you would need to convert that to a 24 hours clock. And to return a value of a certain type in a function use <xsl:sequence select="..."/>, not <xsl:value-of select="..."/>.

The function should probably explicitly check for the presence of PM instead of assuming that the lack of equality with AM means it is a PM time.

Yes, substring($DateTimeAsString, 0, 10) produces 2011-07-1 in this case, because there is no character at the 0th position. –  JLRishe Aug 8 '13 at 16:37
