# Why is there a 1000x performance difference between two versions of merge sort in haskell

It turns out the slow version is actually an insertion sort O(n^2) rather than a merge sort O(n log n) explaining the performance issue. I thought I'd save future readers the pain of wading through the code to discover this answer.

I've written two versions of merge sort in haskell and I can't grok why the one is 1000 times faster than the other. In both cases we start by making item in the list to be sorted a list creating a list of list. Then we pair up lists and merge them until only one list remains. The problem seems to be that I'm calling "doMerge (x1:x2:xs) = doMerge \$ merge x1 x2 : doMerge xs" in the slow version but calling doMerge (mergePairs xs) in the fast version. I'm surprised by the 1000x speed difference!

Looking at the profiler output, it is clear that the slow version is allocating way more memory. I'm not sure why though. Both versions seem similar in my head. Can someone explain why the allocation is so different?

Are you running the slowMergeSort benchmark with an argument of type [Integer] instead of [Int]? –  jtobin Aug 21 '13 at 20:32
You should make them both take [Int] or both polymorphic, so you're actually comparing the same thing. Some portion (but probably not all) of the difference is probably because polymorphism is slower. –  Dirk Holsopple Aug 21 '13 at 20:34
The second version repeatedly merges very long lists. (a,b) denotes the fact that you merge two lists of length a and b. The first version goes: Nx(1,1), (N/2)x(2,2), (N/4)x(4,4) and so on; the second does Nx(1,1) and then (2,2), (2,4), (2,6). At the end you are merging lists of length ~ (2,N). If you are unlucky you'll have to traverse the second (very long) list. This kills the performance. –  Vitus Aug 21 '13 at 20:35
In the versions profiled, both took [Int]. I started the post before I ran the profiling, fixed the types so they matched, then posted the profiling. I forgot to update the slowMergeSort code here. Now I have. –  Tim Perry Aug 21 '13 at 20:36
