I have sql table hr_RegistrantCategories like this:

but it is returning same count in result when i use following query

SELECT  COUNT(RC.RegistrantID)
            FROM dbo.hr_Registrants R INNER JOIN dbo.hr_RegistrantCategories RC ON R.RegistrantID = RC.RegistrantID
            WHERE R.Deleted = 0 
            AND RC.CategoryID IN (SELECT CategoryID FROM dbo.hr_Categories)


            SELECT C.CategoryID,
            (
           SELECT  COUNT(DISTINCT RC.RegistrantID)
            FROM dbo.hr_Registrants R INNER JOIN dbo.hr_RegistrantCategories RC ON R.RegistrantID = RC.RegistrantID
            WHERE R.Deleted = 0 
            AND RC.CategoryID IN (SELECT CategoryID FROM dbo.hr_Categories C1 WHERE C1.Deleted = 0)


        )AS RegistrantsCount
        FROM dbo.hr_Categories C

result is:

CategoryID  RegistrantsCount
1   13
2   13
3   13
4   13
5   13
6   13
7   13
8   13

The inner query is not correlated withe the outer one, so it returns the same value for each line.

SELECT C.CategoryID,
        (
       SELECT  COUNT(DISTINCT RC.RegistrantID)
        FROM dbo.hr_Registrants R INNER JOIN dbo.hr_RegistrantCategories RC ON R.RegistrantID = RC.RegistrantID
        WHERE R.Deleted = 0 
        AND RC.CategoryID IN (SELECT CategoryID FROM dbo.hr_Categories C1 WHERE C1.Deleted = 0)

        AND RC.CategoryID = C.CategoryID -- correlate with the outer query

)AS RegistrantsCount
    FROM dbo.hr_Categories C

I didn't down vote, but I'm guessing its because all the subqueries could be considered sub optimal, when a group by is probably better. –  Bob Vale Aug 24 '13 at 9:13
    
Thanks @BobVale. But then I think the only way to optimize a query is to profile it on real data an look at the execution plan. For example it's surprizing to see how often the query optimizer transforms subquery into hash match –  bwt Aug 24 '13 at 10:04

I think this query does what you want. I'm using LEFT JOIN because I think you also want to know if the count is 0? If not, you can make it an INNER JOIN.

SELECT C.CategoryID, COUNT(RC.RegistrantID) AS RegistrantsCount
    FROM dbo.hr_categories C
    LEFT JOIN dbo.RegistrantCategories RC
        ON RC.CategoryID = C.CategoryID
    LEFT JOIN dbo.hr_Registrants R
        ON R.RegistrantID = RC.RegistrantID
        AND R.Deleted = 0
    WHERE C.Deleted = 0
    GROUP BY C.CategoryID
