I keep getting "segmentation fault: 11" when I compile my code on Mac but it works fine on Windows, I would be really grateful if you could take a look at it and help me solve the problem. Thanks in advance, Francis :D

Well, what line of code is causing the error? Did you try running the program in a debugger? That is the first step. – OldProgrammer Aug 25 '13 at 20:42
    
Oh sorry, I did a little debugging myself and I think the problem is something to do with the STRING token in the Bison file. When the program gets the the "print_stmt: PRINT STRING" line it throws the segmentation fault, When I execute the program and give it the input "print 1;" it works as expected but when I give it the input 'print "Hello World";' it gives the segmentation fault. By the way, lineno++; is in the wrong place. I presume you want to increment lineno when you see a newline; not when you see an identifier. – rici Aug 25 '13 at 21:51

You're making the assumption that yylval can contain either a pointer (to a string) or an integer. The default type for yylval is int, so on a platform where a pointer is the same size as an integer, things will work fine. On a platform where pointers are bigger, the pointer will be corrupted and attempting to dereference it will lead to a segfault.

Don't you get compile warnings?

@Francis: yes, that's the compiler warning you that using an int for a char* may well not work. And, on many platforms, it doesn't. – rici Aug 25 '13 at 21:54

You could define YYSTYPE to be a type large enough to hold either an integer or a pointer (intptr_t, for example), but you'll end up with casts all over the place, so that's a bit ugly, and it's far from type-safe. I'd suggest reading the section of the bison manual on %union, but there are other possibilities, too. See gnu.org/software/bison/manual/html_node/Multiple-Types.html – rici Aug 25 '13 at 23:27

@Francis: you will probably need to use a %union statement and give your terminals and non-terminals types and all the other stuff that goes along with %union. Also, until you know more about C than the C compiler does, you can't afford to ignore its warnings; they are letting you know 'this code does not do what you think it does and you probably do not want it to do what it actually does'. – Jonathan Leffler Aug 26 '13 at 2:42
