I am trying to get a pic16 controller to run an initialization function that displays some text on an LCD only once and then goes on to display other things

The LCD output is working fine the problem is that the initialization function keeps executing. What am I doing wrong ?

... no idea. Are you sure "//do stuff" is not causing soemething funny? Have you tried substrituting it for nothing/blinking led? –  Vorac Sep 2 '13 at 19:39

The char number[] = ""; array is very small, yet you use it in itoa(), thus overwriting random memory.

thanks for pointing that out I changed it to number[16]; I am surprised it still works with the test in countelems(char arr[]); but I suppose that variables are initialized with zero upon creation ? –  user2740888 Sep 4 '13 at 10:15
    
thanks everyone once again I pretty much got everything working including the > 1 second delays. I am just wondering if it is best to find out why the WDT is triggering and resolve that issue instead of simply switching it off. Will read up on WDT a bit. –  user2740888 Sep 4 '13 at 10:17
    
solved the WDT issue by switching it back on setting the prescaler and assigning it to the WDT and clearing the WDT CLRWDT() in the delay function. The delay functions could probably use some refactoring but the code is fully functional. –  user2740888 Sep 4 '13 at 12:35
