I am currently trying to implement a flattening function for classes hierarchy involving composite classes. The problem is i don't know how to propose this flattening function inside of the base class of this hierarchy without breaking the encapsulation of inheritance.
Say i have three classes : AbstractComponent, Component and Composite. Component and Composite inherit from AbstractComponent and Composite class contains an attribute which is a list of AbstractComponent objects.
I want to propose a flatten() function inside AbstractComponent which will retrieve the flattened version of my component, that is:
- if called on a Component object : a list containing this component
- if called on a Composite object : a union of this same recursive method call on every of its elements
For now, my method would return a list of Component objects, but this would lead to an encapsulation problem since AbstractComponent would know Component class.
I could also add this method directly in Composite class, but it would ask me to test in every client method whether my AbstractComponent is a Composite or not, which is a lot of boilerplate i guess ...
Do you have any idea on how to do this in a clean way ?
