The command ActiveDocument.Pages(1).Shapes.Range.Select doesnot seem to work in word 2010. (It used to work in word 2003).

I need to select all the shapes on a specified page (say page 1), then delete the first shape and last shape on each page of a 300 page word document.

Any help on how to do this will be of great help.

You can use ActiveDocument.Shapes(shape_number).Anchor.Information(wdActiveEndPageNumber) to return the page a shape is on. Past this, I'm not sure, since often the shapes will not be ordered logically (for example, shape 1 = pg 1, shape 2 = pg 2, shape 3 = page 1, shape 4 = page 2, etc...). Perhaps there's some way to group all shapes on a page, then determine which is the first and last on a page. –  Aaron Thomas Sep 10 '13 at 19:51

UPDATE1 - Removed (only works on inline shapes)

UPDATE3 - Removed (Delete using the Shape's Name not necessary the right Shape as they can all be the same)

UPDATE4 - Check and Delete using Shape's ID.

To delete the top and bottom shapes of all the pages (be it inline with text or floating). Code below checks for the real Top Left (TL) corner and Bottom Right (BR) corner of the shape when you select it. E.G. The Block Arc here is the considered the Bottom shape instead of the Left Bracket.

If only the TL is of concern, then remove the lines x2 = x1 + ... and y2 = y1 + ... and replace all y2 with y1, x2 with x1 in the if end if blocks.

I checked that the ID does not change when a Shape is added or Deleted.

if the shapes in the document are not created top-down, this procedure will not work. Going through each shape in ActiveDocument does not garuntee you are working through the shapes from top to bottom. When tested on a test document where shapes are added randomly throughout the document (1st shape page 3, 2nd pg 5, 3rd pg 1, 4th pg 6, etc) an erratic deletion of shapes occurs. –  Aaron Thomas Sep 13 '13 at 11:52
@AaronThomas how are you defining "top/bottom?" You could just have an intermediate step where you simply grab the position of each shape on each page, sort, then delete based on this criteria. –  enderland Sep 15 '13 at 0:00
@AaronThomas I have changed the macro and the code in UPDATE2 is for what you described (Top is the shape nearest to top left corner of a page, Bottom is the shape nearest to bottom right. –  PatricK Sep 16 '13 at 3:21

@enderland "top to bottom" refers to how first procedure approached the shapes: Shapes(1) at the top, other shapes following in a top-down order. However, Shapes(1) could be anywhere in the document. But, I think your idea would work. –  Aaron Thomas Sep 16 '13 at 13:11

This gets a little dirty as I have to change/restore relative positioning/sizing in order to get absolute page positioning. Also, changing shapes mess up enumeration, so must refer shapes by names:

When I tried this out on a test document, it did well on the first page. However, when I drew more shapes on the first and second page and ran the procedure again it deleted some shapes that were not the top- or bottom-most shapes on a page. Maybe someone else could check for similar results? –  Aaron Thomas Sep 16 '13 at 17:48

This has already been answered by PatricK, but after looking at some more information I wanted to also post my solution, for future reference.

Another way to do this follows this outline:

  1. For each page, if there are more than 2 shapes,
    • find the top-most and bottom-most shape coordinates
    • delete any shapes that don't match these coordinates

Executing the code would look similar to the following, thanks to an answer from this question:

This should do what you want. It deletes the shape with the highest top on the page and the shape with the lowest bottom from each page. It's a very naive implementation, because I'm not familiar with Word, but given that my earlier code worked for you, there's a reasonable chance this will do what you want.

Unfortunately this won't work. It will run until all shapes except 2 are deleted. Moreover it doesn't take into account that there may be multiple pages. –  Aaron Thomas Sep 18 '13 at 18:06

Sorry, but on my test workbook it doesn't always delete the correct shapes. To test, try creating a multi-page document (I just copy a SO webpage and paste special...unformatted text), then create multiple sheets on several pages of the document. After you run the code once, move some shapes around, add some shapes (maybe ctrl-click a shape to copy?), then run code again to verify it works even if shapes are in different positions. –  Aaron Thomas Sep 18 '13 at 19:15
I'm not sure I understand. What this code does is identify the shape that is closest to the top and the one that is closest to the bottom on the active page, and deletes them. Is that not what you want? (except of course that you want it to work for every page not just the active one) –  SJC Sep 18 '13 at 19:23
Good point, you don't have to create a multi-page document to test. But when I tested the code it didn't always delete the correct shapes, even on the active page. –  Aaron Thomas Sep 18 '13 at 19:27
