I'm trying to write a java program that allows the user to input a series of data values then for the program to sort through finding the mean and the median of that series, using an interface to "treat" different objects as if they were the same. However when I run my JUnit test, it keeps saying my interface is null.

NoiseFilter.java

You never initialize the filter field in the test class

NoiseFilter filter;
SensorData dataSet;


@Before
public void setUp() throws Exception {
    this.dataSet = new SensorData();
    dataSet.setFilter(filter);
}

so it is null here and that reference propagates to the SensorData object you are testing.

public void setFilter(NoiseFilter filterVar) {
    this.filter = filterVar;
}

filterVar is null when you call the above.

You have to initialize it with an implementation of your interface, such as your AveragingFilter:

@Before
public void setUp() throws Exception {
    this.filter = new AveragingFilter(); // or something like it
    this.dataSet = new SensorData();
    dataSet.setFilter(filter);
}

Also, you are testing for null in a few places using this pattern:

if( x.equals( null ) ) {...

This will not work, because this is calling the equals(Object) method on the object x. In Java, null does not have any methods. You always have to check for null against its identity, using the == operator. Your examples should read:

if( x == null ) { ...

I tried the this.filter = new NoiseFilter(); and since it's an interface, not a type, I got an error saying cannot instantiate type. I don't know how to initialize an interface directly. –  Ashton Sep 12 '13 at 19:44
    
@DannyBurkhart I could not know it was an interface. You cannot instantiate interfaces. Do you have a class that implements that interface? If so initialize it with that. If not, create one (possibly as an anonymous class. –  Sotirios Delimanolis Sep 12 '13 at 19:46

There's an implementation of the interface in the question, so you do want this.filter = new AveragingFilter();. There's also another error with null-checking; I'll see if I can edit the answer. –  Calum Sep 12 '13 at 21:05

Your setUp()method does not create a filter.

It creates an instance of SensorData and then passes a null value to setFilter. When getFilteredResult() is called later on it runs into a NPE.

Added after commenting:

Anonymous class:

with Mockito:

How can I initialize the filter? Or assign a value to it? This is my first time working with an interface. –  Ashton Sep 12 '13 at 19:47
    
If you just want to test that the call to getFilteredResult calles the filter, than either use an anonymous class (like Sotirios Delimanolis suggested above) or look into mocking frameworks like Mockito. –  hagbard Sep 12 '13 at 20:14
