I recently implemented PGAS parallel computing model on a cluster of HP Quad-core machines running Ubuntu 12.04. I used Berkeley UPC as the PGAS language and created a ssh password-less login in-order to communicate between the nodes. I tried to run UDP based UPC jobs following the instructions in this link under the heading RUNNING UDP-BASED UPC JOBS. The steps I followed are listed below.

  • Defining the nodes in 'machines' file:

    node0

    node1

    node2

  • Setting the environmental variable '$UPC_NODEFILE':

    $UPC_NODEFILE=machines

  • Compile:

    upcc -network=udp -pthreads=4 hello.upc -o helloupc

  • Run:

    upcrun -n 4 helloupc

But when I try to run the program it gives the following error

upcrun: nodes not specified! See RUNNING UDP-BASED UPC JOBS in 'man upcrun'

Is there any mistake I have done or anything to be added? Please help me.

The hello.upc code snippet if necessary:

int main() {
 printf("Hello from thread %i/%i\n", MYTHREAD, THREADS);
 upc_barrier;
 return 0;
}

Did you export the UPC_NODEFILE environment variable before starting upcrun? –  Hristo Iliev Sep 27 '13 at 11:59

I found the what has gone wrong... putting $UPC_NODEFILE instead of UPC_NODEFILE..which is a pretty stupid mistake –  metalmadz Oct 4 '13 at 7:47

It crossed my mind that it could possibly be the source of your problem, but then executing $VAR=val should give an error as the shell expands $VAR and executes the result (=val if VAR is undefined or oldval=val if it is) as a command. Therefore I dismissed it as the possible cause. Good that you found it out. –  Hristo Iliev Oct 4 '13 at 10:09
