I'm actually thinking about unit testing a application monitoring part of a project i'm working on. There's a public interface which contains methods like this:

public void Initialize(String dbConnectionString);
public void Create(Variable variable, VariableType type);
public void Add<T>(Variable variable, T value);

Variable describes the variable which should be monitored (e.g. Variable.ProcessCpuTime), VariableType the values which should be created bevor persisting (e.g. VariableType.Max | VariableType.Average).

What happens internally in short: It creates a object for each variable which is created. This objects will store the value which are added via the add value. Every XX minutes (e.g. every hour) the following happens:

  • Iterate over all available "storage" objects
  • Take all values and calculate the values specified in VariableType (e.g. sum and average)
  • Persist the calculated values in a database
  • Clear the object

Everything beside Initialize, Create and Add isn't important for any other class than the application monitoring (e.g. there's no feedback about the persisting methods to external classes). Classes which use the application monitor should only care about what they want to monitor, how it's stored / calculated / persisted isn't relevant to outside classes.

So right now there's the question: What should I unit test there? A lot of people say only test public methods, but in this case, this would leave a big part of the functionality of the application monitor untested. I could test if the correct object is created when I call the create method, as well as if the correct value is added to an object when I call the Add method etc.

But I think it would be interesting to test other functionalities too. E.g. I would like to know if the calculations of sum / average are done correctly. Or if the error handling is correct if theres no database connection etc. Most of the classes / methods which handle this functionalities are either protected or private.

Is there a best practice in such a case? Should I make classes / methods public, which aren't needed / usefull outside the application monitor? Should I leave all the internal stuff untested (In terms of unittests)?
