I'm working on a project where multiple systems need to be integrated, and for this situations messaging seems to be the best solution. There is a lot of excellent literature on this topic, however one thing that strikes me is that it is assumed that the message consumers have been listining from the very beginning.

However, I've yet to encounter an example where messaging is applied to a running system. I.e., what is the common approach (or are the best practices) to catch up for new message consumers in a running system? For example, if we have a system that publishes events like NewCustomerRegistered, and a new consumer would like to build a database of all customers, how should this consumer catch up with the past?

I can think of the following methods:

  1. Perform an initial synchronization by exporting data from the running system and importing it in the new system; downside is that data is synchronized, while logic has to be invoked for past data (like sending an email for each new-and-preexisting consumer)

  2. Use control messages to inform the message producer to generate these messages from the past (or generate a set of messages that can be used to construct the current system state) and publish these messages exclusively to the queue of the new consumer; caveat: race conditions can occur when new events are published during initial synchronization.

Is there anyone who can give me some advice on this matter? Thank you in advance.
