# CRC32 and MD5 algorithms for dummies

I'd like to implement the CRC32 and MD5 algorithms on my own but I'm still trying to wrap my head around the different sources I've found on the subject. Could someone helpful point me to a ressource that explains the algorithms in a simple format or post a bullet list of the different steps so I can attempt to fill them in. TIA.

Here's the respective wikipedia pages on each. I understand part of what's being done but bitwise operations are something I have difficulty with. That and mathematics isn't my forte.

Not helpful, but here goes: if you struggle with bitwise operations and are uncomfortable with the maths required for cryptography, I humbly suggest you are not ready to write your own implementations of CRC32 and MD5. Why do you want to implement these ? Obviously not because you expect that to be the fastest and best way to get working code. And often people want to write their own versions to truly understand what's going on -- but you don't appear to want to do that either. Go on, learn some maths, learn bit-twiddling, they'll improve your life immeasurably. –  High Performance Mark Dec 16 '09 at 13:06
I work in Java but I want to do this for an early version of Unrealscript which doesn't have these as in-built functions. –  James Poulson Dec 16 '09 at 13:08
@High-Performance Mark: I do actually understand bitwise operations on a basic level. It just appears that articles on the subject make some assumptions about a reader's previous knowledge (hence the "for dummies" title). I'll see if I can tackle CRC this weekend as it's the simplest. –  James Poulson Dec 16 '09 at 13:15

The RFC-1321 spec about MD5 also contains a detailed explanation of the algo. The Wiki article about CRC is pretty clear enough.

After all, your major problem is apparently actually the ignorance about the binary system and the bitwise operators. Here are several excellent guides about the binary system and the involved operators:

Edit: if the actual reason that you wanted to homegrow a MD5 function is that you actually can't seem to find an existing function in Java, then you may find this snippet useful:

but if you really wanna figure out what is going on with md5 / sha1 etc, you should probably take a security course, which i tried but failed :( good luck to you!

Security courses are good to increase your understanding. But unless security is your core business I suggest you don't try to implement an algorithm yourself. –  Onots Dec 16 '09 at 13:15
This MD5 example is flawed. It doesn't prefix 0 in case of `byte < 0x10` and it is also relying on the platform default character encoding which may not per se be the correct encoding. –  BalusC Dec 16 '09 at 15:44
