Months ago when our Windows development machines did some software updates (windows 7 at that time, now win 8), we noticed a component developed on VB6, deployed through COM+ and serving a classic ASP website hosted along an asp.net v3.5 website in IIS 7 (now IIS8) in 32 bits mode, stopped working. The website basically was unable to load the application from COM+. So the application dll couldn't be deployed to the production server this way (Windows 2008 R2) due the same reason.

The solution was to continue compiling the DLL in a different machine without the updates applied until a solution is found.

During some tests in Win8 I noticed the application started working again if deployed as a "Library" and not as "Server". As per the Microsoft's documentation this has some consequences: Types of COM+ Applications

  • Server applications. A COM+ server application runs in its own process. Server applications can support all COM+ services.
  • Library applications. A COM+ library application runs in the process of the client that creates it. More specifically, the components in a library application are always loaded into the process of the creator. Library applications are not explicitly associated with a server process. They can use role-based security but do not support remote access or queued components.

I confirmed this information by running handle.exe (sysinternals) on both the production and test servers. The prod having the COM+ application running in "server" mode and the test in "library" mode.

The results showed our DLL was loaded by dllhost.exe in Prod and by w3wp.exe in test.

Do you know of a better approach to the problem? have you experienced this with COM+?

Now, having a memory leak at high levels of user load, we started to think about recycling the application pools at some points in order to keep the memory fresh without disturbing the user work, until the cause (memory leak or whatever) is found. So we moved the asp.net session out of process, i.e. to aspnet_state.exe in order the recycling to not touch the session memory information. But now coming to think of the COM+ stuff, I realize having this application hosted by w3wp.exe won't be a good thing because the recycling will drop the session of the classic ASP website.

Does make sense to think the application pool recycling will drop the classic ASP sessions? or do you think the those sessions will also be hosted on aspnet_state.exe, so they won't be dropped by the recycling?

I continued researching and opted to recycle the application pool manually, and found a problem. I'm using the oracle 11g DB client, which creates a connection pool. Seems this pool or the entire OCI cannot be initialized after the recycling in this scenario. The COM+ Application trapped this error:

Do you know a mechanism to re-initialize the connection pool either by code or configuration?

Would the Oracle DRCP (Database Resident Connection Pooling) be a solution for this issue?

Another problem was detected. Now that the classic ASP site is running inside the w3wp.exe process and not in dll_host.exe anymore, apart from the Oracle connection pool every application pool recycle drops also the in-proc sessions of the server.

Tests: - NSession: raise an error. - NCache Express: unable to install it. throws an error. - NCache Pro: long decision.

Do you know of another approach to Classic ASP out-of-process?
