I need a textbox that keeps a dollar sign in it. I don't want the user to be allowed to not use it in the text box.

Here is the code that I have that does a pretty good job. Now I just need to hard code a $ at the beginning somehow.

why do you create such bizarre hurdles for yourself? place a label alongside with the '$' in it so it is clear that dollars are the entry. The important thing is that the user understands what the scale or format of the entry is. Are you really going to throw an error message if they DONT enter a dollar sign? –  Plutonix Oct 11 '13 at 18:38
    
no, but what is inside the textbox gets printed and formulated to a materials list. it looks very unprofessional to have some totals price with $ and otheres without it. I guess I am anal but I am sure by teacher will count off for it. But having the $ label is soothing that I may resort to thanks –  BURTON JOHN Oct 11 '13 at 18:48

then format the text to currency when you print - a very trivial matter vs inflicting a nightmare GUI on the user. Assuring there is a '$' where it should be is the job of the code, not the user. EVen with the Masked Text Edit, you will need to format it... –  Plutonix Oct 11 '13 at 18:50

WHY does it need to be in the text box? Use MAskedEdit to show the user that a dollar amount is expected, then use string.format to print or display the value in dollar format when needed. You dont need to FORCE the '$' as part of the input, in fact it will add a step to take it off to do math with the input. There are several approaches to solve your problem, but first you need to add a MaskedTextBox control to your form.

Once you have done that, you can set the 'Mask' property of your control (in the F4 properties) to whatever you wish it to be like, '$00.00'. Or, you can tie it to an event like a button click by doing this:

private void someButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
   maskedTextBox1.Mask = "$00.00";
}

In either case, that should provide you with the result you are hoping for.

this is not the solution. What if I want to enter 100.00 I cant. If I code for that then I cant enter 99.00 –  BURTON JOHN Oct 11 '13 at 18:53

I beg to differ. It is a solution. You are just focused on the example I gave in the answer; an example that is easily changed by editing what I wrote above. For example, setting the property to, "$000.00". The simple fact is, what you are asking, as Plutonix already stated in your original post, is bad design. no. I ll take the first code that works, I just haven't got anything to work. its all pretty confusing. I don't care what I put in the textbox as long as I don't get errors ant the output is in uniform. the problem is that after it leaves the textbox it does many different things. Masked Textbox is way to go, just make your mask large enough to handle your greatest possible value. A mask of maskedTextBox1.Mask = "$999,999.00" would let your user input any number between 0 and 999,999.99 and the thousands seperator or space is automatic for them in Culture setting. msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/… –  Jason Hughes Oct 11 '13 at 20:44

Look into the MaskedTextBox control. You should be able to use a mask like $00.00.

You can try using a RichTextBox control:

RichTextBox1.Text = "$"
RichTextBox1.SelectAll()
RichTextBox1.SelectionProtected = True

Although the simpler solution might be to just place a label with that dollar sign in front of the TextBox, or as others have mentions, a MaskedTextBox control was designed for this situation.

Code (programs) are supposed to make life easier for users, not harder. If you force a $ into the textbox, it is only a valid approach for a US user. Second, it converts a valid entry from numeric (numerals) to text and requires another step if it needs to be saved to a database or used in calculations.

If the real issue is printing a $ all you need is:

 decVar.ToString("C2")

For a visual cue for the user, either a label or the masked edit control. It is BAD PRACTICE to force the user to do your work. Formatting the data for display in the appropriate format is your job, not that of the user, even if it is just one keypress.

Another solution, one that might be up your alley, is to swap out the display. In textBox_Leave:

   textAmount.Text = decVar.ToString("C2")

In textbox_enter:

    textAmount.Text = decVar.ToString

So when they are NOT editting the textbox it has the $ and will print on the packing slip or whatever. I should note that if you are printing from your variables that decVar.ToString("C2") is more flexible than printing textAmount.Text because your way requires the order form or whatever to still be around!
