The code prints: 16 36

I know that it is a standard practice to write macros as: #define PROD(x) ((x)*(x)) instead of #define PROD(x) x*x.

My question is: Is it replacing the PRODUCT as ((i+1)*(i+1))? The italic i = i+1;

So is it first incrementing i to 5 and again incrementing it to 6 because of x*x and assigning 6 as the final value of i?

Everybody knows that a macro is replaced with its value right before compilation.

You are getting an undefined behavior, because modifying the value of a variable twice (or more) in the same statement is undefined.

Thus, ++i * ++i (which is what you get for doing PROD(++i)), is basically undefined - and everything can happen.

After MACRO replacement your code will have a line like

printf("%d", ++i*++i);

Here two consecutive executions are getting perfomed on variable i without any sequence point in between causing Undefined Behaviour.

For me the output is understandable.

Used c11 for my mac:

Even if it is undefined, and I would never use it with such a warning. Tried it just for fun 50 times, always the same output, of course on another CPU/Compiler etc. it could be different. –  Viktor Lexington Oct 15 '13 at 8:25
