I would like to use the String.Compare Method (String, String, Boolean) from the .net framework. Lets say i have the expression string.compare(strA, strB, True) = 0. The zero says that strA equals strB. If the value is Greater than zero then strA is greater than strB. But how can a string be greater than another. Could anyone explain for me what happens when the value is greater or less 0 because i dont understand it.

From MSDN Compare(String, String, Boolean) Compares two specified String objects, ignoring or honoring their case, and returns an integer that indicates their relative position in the sort order. "Greater than" means "comes after" and "less than" means "comes before". –  Mike Oct 15 '13 at 11:31

Every string represenst a value using lexicographical order. a = 01, b = 02, etc...

So if you compare strings, its comparing it's value ("b" > "a") and "b" < "aaa". You also can know the value of each string: http://bytes.com/topic/c/answers/769137-how-convert-alphabet-numbers

string.compare(strA, strB, True) = 0 will return true, if strA and strB values are the same (same int value, it's not means that it is the same string). If strA is bigger then it will return 1, and if lesser then -1.

Strings can be considered to have a logical order, in the same way as numbers; the comparison reflects that order; in the same way that 3 follows 1, "cupcake" follows "apple" in lexicographical order.

Strings are compared using lexicographical order. Ignoring culture specific cases where combinations of characters are treated as a single character and casing the order is quite simple (like you would look up a name in the phone directory):

  1. As long as the characters in both strings are equal you keep moving to the next character.
  2. If both string end they are equal.
  3. If one string ends it is less than the other string.
  4. Compare the position in the "alphabet" (ordinal position in the character set) of the two different characters to determine the order.


  • aa == aa
  • aa < aaa
  • aaa < aab
