I'm trying to set up, what I think is, a pretty standard library at work. It holds various standard support functions and interfaces to third party integrations. Making things up here to make it easier to show. First off I've got this structure:

We have some utility functions for calling and connecting to different systems, but also for logging and configuration. There are some intra dependencies in this, for instance most (if not all) depend on configuration above.

Primarily due to the intra dependency do I want to keep all projects here in the same version. Thus in the parent pom I have the version, and that's of course global. In the specific project poms I have the dependencies to the siblings needed. I've tried to replace the version strings there with properties, the same property I'm using for the version in the parent pom. However, mvn doesn't seems to accept that as it's giving me:

[ERROR]     'dependencies.dependency.version' for com.mycomapany.myproject:util-configuration:jar must be a valid version but is '${myproject.version}'. @ line 32, column 1

I can solve that by putting all the dependencies in the parent pom, where I can use the myproject.version property. This leads me to a few questions:

  1. Doesn't it defeat the purpose to have all the dependencies in the parent pom? In my mind it makes great sense to have them listed in the pom for the specific part which actually has the dependency. To me it helps with readability as I can easily see any dependencies.

  2. What happens when I later build something using this library with the assembly plug-in? We're building stand alone jars and don't want to pull in all dependencies not needed with each jar, or will it just pull in the ones actually used by each? IE if I have a project which depends on util-configuration above, will it pull in all the siblings listed in the parent pom of util-configuration or will it see that there are plenty unused things there?

  3. What's the reasoning behind this? Clearly what I consider sane here (putting dependencies at the lowest possible level) is not considered sane. I've skimmed through the two books at Sonatype and the pom documentation at maven but I couldn't see an explanation for the reasoning.

  4. In the child poms I'm referring to the parent pom by version. What's the sane way to bump that? Is it to use mvn versions:set -DnewVersion= or is there another way? And does that work with using a property or do I have to have two version strings for versions:set to work? One for the property for the parent pom itself (without a variable) and one for all the dependencies (set with a property so I don't have to change in 20-ish places)?

I realise point 4 above here might not be clear but for now I have this in the parent pom:

      <version>${myproject.version}</version>
    ...
        <dependency>
          <groupId>com.mycompany.myproject</groupId>
          <artifactId>util-configuration</artifactId>
          <version>${myproject.version}</version>
        </dependency>
...
   <properties>
    <myproject.version>0.0.1-SNAPSHOT</myproject.version>

And what I'm trying to ask is if the above works with the versions:set or if I have to change the first to a string and then after bumping the version have to edit the myproject.version property.

Sorry for the very long question(s) but they feel very connected.

*edit Added the myproject.version in the snippet from the current (working) parent pom to make it a bit clearer with my property and below I'm adding what I'd like (and what would make sense to me) the myproject-internal-somesystem pom file with its depency to myproject-util-configuration to look like. That is, using the myproject.version property from the parent so when bumping project version I won't have to edit all the individual poms and bump their dependencies. This doesn't work though, instead I have to have the dependency in the parent pom if I want to use myproject.version.

Added what I think is the relevant parts, util-configuration doesn't have anything relevant (not depending on anything) so I just added where I define the myproject.version property and how I'd like myproject-internal-internal_system1 to look – Jon Oct 20 '13 at 8:40

It's shown under "I realise point 4 above here might not be clear but for now I have this in the parent pom:". I found another way to set the dependency version in the child poms. Using ${project.version} works, even though I haven't set it in my child, so that property is being inherited the way I was expecting my own properties would be. I've used property ${myproject.version} in other parts of the child pom so I know it gets propagated. Just seems like I can't use it inside "dependencies" – Jon Oct 20 '13 at 15:09
