Is it possible to recreate this diagram in R with base graphics, lattice or ggplot2?

Here is some toy data:

I think following is as close as it can get.

EDIT : using data.table it can be a it simpler

Thanks for your answer. I tried your code, but I get the following error when trying to run line 5: Error in plot.window(...) : need finite 'ylim' values In addition: Warning messages: 1: In xy.coords(x, y, xlabel, ylabel, log) : NAs introduced by coercion 2: In min(x) : no non-missing arguments to min; returning Inf 3: In max(x) : no non-missing arguments to max; returning -Inf –  majom Oct 29 '13 at 15:03

Yes, it is possible (to some degree). This should get you started.

# plot (here you can change many things, depending on what is important to 
#       reproduce exactly as in original and where you are willing to have some 
#       differences)
ggplot(dt, aes(date, id)) + 
  geom_point(aes(shape=factor(first)), size=3) + 
  scale_shape_manual(values = c('1'=5, '0'=4, '2'=17), guide=FALSE) +
