I can't understand what's wrong with this:

import math
# set up variables
initial_x = 0 ; initial_y = 10.1 # initial entry point

x = 1.4  ;   y = -9.6 # point of reflection P(1.4,-9.6)

grad_tangent = -4*x/y # gradient of tangent at P

grad_normal = -1/grad_tangent # gradient of normal at P

grad_incident = (initial_y - y)/(initial_x - x) # gradient of incident ray

# find angle, theta , between incident ray and normal

theta = math.atan( (grad_normal - grad_incident )/(1 + grad_normal * grad_incident)


# determine gradient of reflected ray
grad_reflec = ( (1/math.tan(2*theta)) - 1/grad_incident) /( 1 + (1/(grad_incident * math.tan(2*theta))))

Are you trying to calculate the gradient of a particular function? What is the formula for the function itself? – John Oct 31 '13 at 17:43

You're missing a parenthesis:

theta = math.atan( (grad_normal - grad_incident )/(1 + grad_normal * grad_incident)

Should be:

theta = math.atan( (grad_normal - grad_incident )/(1 + grad_normal * grad_incident) )
