I have an assignment to generate every possible word from a 7 digit phone number and use PrintWriter to save it as a .txt file. My code is below but my output (currently just printing to console) is the same 3 "words" 2187 times.

@Jongware IMHO, the way I think, the OP has made some effort and is asking help with some difficulty, so it is not cheating. The OP is taking effort to join SO and get help/guidance with the logic. It is our responsibility to guide him but make sure not give him the entire code. :) – JNL Nov 5 '13 at 16:05
    
@Jongware If one of us were to just write the assignment and hand it to him/her, then yes that would be cheating. However by properly demonstrating effort and asking for guidance, this is more like going and seeing a Tutor for help on an assignment. At least that's how I see it – hankd Nov 5 '13 at 16:06
    
I think the purpose of this assignment is to illustrate recursion - your final loop would try all possible characters of the last character, right? If you write a method that is able to do that as its ending case, you should be able to expand upon that and call it until it finally gets its ending case and hence your code would not need these three loops (which I'm not certain what the loops are doing seeing as the indexes or calculations aren't commented nor do they have meaningful names). – MetroidFan2002 Nov 5 '13 at 16:07

I believe that the following code solves the problem correctly and demonstrates the use of tail recursion, which sounded like the goal of the exercise. Also note that I'm making use of the various items in the Collection library rather than just using raw arrays and large if/then/else blocks.
