I am trying to map my own class to an integer:

This code does not compile and I cannot understand the error message. It seems that if I change into map<point*, int> it will compile but it is not what I want. My purpose is that when I call mayMap.count(b), it will return 1. What changes shall I make? Thank you very much! Error Message:

Thanks! I realized that it should be ordered so I added operator< method to the struct and it is still not working though. What else is wrong here? –  Ra1nWarden Nov 12 '13 at 18:58

The reason your updated code still does not work is that operator < is not const. Change it to:

bool operator<(const point& b) const  
{
  return (x < b.x && y < b.y);
};

Your problem in: map is stl container that stored ordered data. And it need defined static bool operator, with 2 const point arguments, something like this:

static bool operator<(const point b, const point a) {
    return (a.x<b.x && a.y<b.y);
};

Or defined function comparator, and add it as additional[3d] argument to map

template < class Key,                                     // map::key_type
           class T,                                       // map::mapped_type
           class Compare = less<Key>,                     // map::key_compare
           class Alloc = allocator<pair<const Key,T> >    // map::allocator_type
           > class map;

But i dont rember excatly right for Comparer;
