I have a pandas dataframe with two columns:

ddf.head()

    a    b
0   3136 13280
1   3072 13312
2   3152 13296
3   3120 13248
4   3120 13200

I would like to calculate the difference between consecutive elements in the same column. Now, if I do it for one column at a time (ddf['a'].diff()) it works as I expect, but if I try ddf.diff() it gives:

How about df.apply(np.diff)? –  BrenBarn Nov 12 '13 at 21:15

You can use this:

>>> df - df.shift(1)
    a   b
0 NaN NaN
1 -64  32
2  80 -16
3 -32 -48
4   0 -48

But actually, at my machine, df.diff() works ok:

>>> df.diff()
    a   b
0 NaN NaN
1 -64  32
2  80 -16
3 -32 -48
4   0 -48

You are right. I did df.astype(float32).diff() and it worked. Thanks –  Fra Nov 13 '13 at 0:14
