I've spend several days debugging a nasty intermittent bug in my Android app and hope someone can give me a hint on how to further investigate...

My interpretation is: this is a crash within the Dalvik engine happening when a thread is created on native level (pthread_create). In this particular case, the thread created seems to be one used to serve the UI front end (I'm not in that topic). So this creation is triggered by Android, not my app. This thread in particular is created when touching the interface of my app after it has been sitting for some 15 to 30 minutes without touching it (with screen forced to display and not go to sleep). But this is just a sample... I had a AsyncTask using THREAD_POOL_EXECUTOR running in the app which created threads over time - and it generated the same crash. I changed this to use a dedicated Thread object instead and the crash vanished for this situation. Furthermore I added a test case creating and running numerous Java threads too. The crash appeared randomly after creating thousands of threads, sometimes hundreds of thousands (certainly in a sequence). So what I want to say is "thread creation - both motivated natively, or by creating Java threads - generates this type of crash intermittently".

I have read that pthread_create crashing is usually due to heap corruption. As the app uses JNI heavily (about 50% of the code), this is certainly a candidate to trigger the crash... I used several tools for heap guarding without a result. Furthermore, the JNI code is used on a different platform (iOS) without problems. Most important, I do not get any other heap corruption related crashes. It happens for thread creation only...

So back to my main question: any idea how to debug that beast? any idea what else could trigger a crash in pthread_create?

In case more information is needed, please let me know.

P.S. Tested both Java and native heap usage too. No leaks here and it is typically around 7 to 8 MB for the native heap. Test device is a Google Nexus 4 (which has by far more memory available).
