For a bit of fun, I thought I'd write a simple parser that accepts a BNF-like grammar and some code and output an abstract syntax tree. It's all working quite nicely, with one quite big problem.

Where the grammar specifies an option of multiple tokens (with |), the first option to be able to run to completion is used. If however a latter option was actually the correct one, then it will fail at the outer level.

In the code below, the first line $abc = defghi works. The second line $abc = def.ghi should, but doesn't, because <variabledeclaror><identifier>+ is matching first (when it should be <identifier>+.<identifier>+), then at the outer level it's failing.

Commented out is a sorting function that goes a small way towards fixing some cases, including this one, but doesn't solve the actual problem.

How do I go about properly matching the correct tokens when there's an option of several?
