I have the following code, which receives data from a database ( quite a lot ) and passes them to a function which is processing those data. Here's what the codes looks like.

Which seems to me, PHP does not free $data, instead it is just putting it all on top? $feed is just a string. Not very large. I can't see why that script is running out of memory. And why it doesn't free data.

So what is the $o*5000 value doing in $u->getDataLimit() and in $p->process()? –  Mark Baker Nov 26 '13 at 20:18

You must use memory_get_usage() because memory_get_peak_usage() is the max memory used.

When you make an unset the memory is cleared, but if you have another copy of this var this copy remains in memory.

In your call to $p->process($data) if data is not a object or array, will be copied. If the data is an array and you modify this in the process function, then will be copied too. Try passing by reference with a &.

I suggest you use xhprof extension to make a memory usage inspection. You can see the memory usage by function.

Alright, the unset seems to work, when using memory_get_usage(). But only the first time. Why can't we see an decrease of memory on the second, third ... time? Cause of that copying problem? Which I didn't get excactly. $data is an array. Well actually an Judy Object. What shall i do so that copying doesnt occur? –  Michael Hirn Nov 26 '13 at 20:24

Sadly, passing by reference, doesn't have any effect on memory usage. But the problem seems to be in process(). By the way process() "header" looks like this, now: public function findNewPrice(&$products, $multi); –  Michael Hirn Nov 26 '13 at 20:31

I know, but that is a large method/class. I don't know which parts I should post. So I have do deal with it for my own, I think. But thanks for XHProf. I guess that will help me, find that memory leak. Thank you. I will mark that question as accepted. –  Michael Hirn Nov 26 '13 at 21:17
