class Complex implements Recursive {
  Map<String, Recursive> map;
  ...
}

class Simple implements Recursive { ... }

How do I deserialize this json:

To deserialize your JSON you need a custom deserializer for your Recursive interface. In that kind of class you need to examine your JSON and decide what kind of class to instantiate as the type field in the JSON itself. Here you have a basic deserializer I wrote for you example.

Of course it can be improve to manage borderline cases (for example, what happens if you do not have type field?).

Hey thanks, this could work. But imagine that I have many more properties inside both Complex and Simple class.. then I'd have to manually deserialize each field (..get("map");) essentially losing all the auto-magic GSON gives me. And what if there are not 2, but 10 subclasses? Any ideas? –  Parobay Dec 3 '13 at 6:19

If you can put "type" outside the Class serialization, it does the trick. I can show you, but not now. I think I can prepare a full example within next 24 hours –  giampaolo Dec 3 '13 at 7:10
    
this would be ok? { type: "complex", instance: { map: { ... } } } meaning that type is not on the same level as actual class fields (here nested inside the instance element) ? –  Parobay Dec 3 '13 at 7:12
