I have been taking part in the Coursera reactive programming course and noticed the parallels between

  1. .NET Tasks and Scala Futures
  2. Observables are obviously very similar
  3. .NET IEnumerable and Scala Iterable

In the course Erik Meijer draws a table similar to this

           Sync     | Async
Single   | Try      | Future
Multiple | Iterable | Observable

While the rest have equivalent or similar constructs in .NET I couldn't find anything like try. Does something similar exist?

From this definition: The Try type represents a computation that may either result in an exception, or return a successfully computed value I don't know of any language construct that directly maps to this. A Task might be able to provide a similar result though: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/… – asawyer Dec 6 '13 at 13:34

@asawyer I thought this might be the case. A task is asynchronous and Try is synchronous so I'm not sure if that fits in the same position in the table... :) – Jim Jeffries Dec 6 '13 at 13:37

You'd obviously have to overload Invoke to accept the range of typed delegates that you desire.
