Hi a newbie to python here...so pls forgive me if it is a basic question

I would like to make my code quite short and noticed that there are simple ways to go through a list of sorts by putting for insides of the square parentheses

e.g.

x = []
for i in range(10):
    x.append(i)
print x

is equivalent to:

y[i for i in range(10)]
print y

so i would like to shorten the following in a similar way

import matplotlib as plt
import numpy as np
y = []
for i in xrange(499):
    y.append(np.random.binomial(500,.5))

plt.hist(y)

I tried this but it didn't work

z[np.random.binomial(500,.5) for i in xrange(499)]

This feature is called a list comprehension. Have a look at this documentation to see how they work.

In this particular case, however, you don't need a list comprehension because numpy.random.binomial takes a size argument. To generate a vector containing 499 samples, you can do this:

z = np.random.binomial(500, 0.5, size=499)

This should work:

z = [np.random.binomial(500,.5) for i in xrange(499)]

In this case that numpy function can accept a third parameter for size so that probably faster.

z = np.random.binomial(500, .5, 499)

numpy.random.binomial takes a size/shape - use that:

z = np.random.binomial(500, 0.5, 499)

Where is =?

y = [i for i in range(10)]
# ^

z = [np.random.binomial(500,.5) for i in xrange(499)]
# ^

numpy.fromiter might be your best friend. It lets you create a new 1-dimensional array from an iterable object.

basically:

>>> iterable = (x*x for x in range(5))
>>> np.fromiter(iterable, np.float)
array([  0.,   1.,   4.,   9.,  16.])

so for you:

>>> iterable = np.asarray([np.random.binomial(500,.5) for x in xrange(499)])
>>> np.fromiter(iterable, np.float)

while a basic list comprehension is performer for your small array, this will be much more performant if you're looking to use array's of much larger sizes.
